Nikon D90

Nikon D90 is a pretty old camera since it was released in 2008 or so. But this is probably one of the best semi pro cameras Nikon has come up with. 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor which is really great for something came out in 2008 or so. I think Nikon D90 was the first DSLR capable of shooting video. This DSLR camera was so successful and far beyond rest of the DSLR camera on its range when it was released. This is one reason why it Nikon had it in market without replacing it with newer model. There were other new Nikon DSLR camera models but none of those were for replacing Nikon D90 DSLR camera.

Nikon D90 was the first DSLR camera to record videos since it can record 720p high-definition video with monaural sound. But no auto focus while recording which was a huge down flow. Soon after this rest of the camera brands caught up and nearly all DSLR cameras released since then have video recording capability. Many Camera critics named D90 as one of the best DSLR cameras all times and even it received  a score of 72.6 from DxOmark's camera sensor RAW image ratings which placed this camera above even more expensive cameras such as the Canon EOS 1D Mark III (71), Canon EOS 5D (70.9) and Nikon D300S ! At Flickr,  D90 is ranked as the most used Nikon system in terms of picture uploads.

Some believed Nikon D7000 DSLR camera was going to replace Nikon D90 but it never happened. Nikon D7000 hasn't enjoyed the same popularity as D90. Nikon USA has explicitely pointed out at photo.net that Nikon D7000 is an addition to the Nikon DSLR line up but not a replacement for the D90. There is one great plus point D7000 have, has a build-in AF motor to work with older AF/AF-D lenses that have no AF motor in the lens. It can also meter with AI/AI-S lenses that have no build-in CPU.

Nikon officially discontinued D90 in 2011 but Nikon hadn't stated which model will be the successor. They release several DSLR models soon after like Nikon D7000, Nikon800, Nikon D4 and Nikon D3200. But these were not exactly for replacing the great Nikon DSLR, D90. It's peak time is long gone but still photographers around the world use this great DSLR camera. These days you can buy a Nikon D90 for around $600 for body only and for about $780 with 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens.

  1. Excellent post. One quick clarification - both the D90 and D7000 have built- in AF motors but only the D7000 can meter with AI/AI-S lenses.
